There is an increase in male plastic surgery procedures, especially liposuction.  As men grow older, they are experiencing more fat deposits in such areas as chest, abdomen, love handles, and neck.  Plastic surgery, specifically liposuction, has proven to be an effective tool for the removal of unwanted fat deposits.  These fat deposits can be difficult to lose with diet and exercise.

Plastic surgery in men uses many of the same procedures as in women.  However, the composition of a male body is a bit different. Male skin contains more hair with means that there is a greater supply of blood.  This increased blood supply causes additional bleeding during the procedure but also helps with healing, resulting in a shorter recovery time.  Male skin is also thicker and results in less dimpling and stretch marks.

Over 1 million women and men are diagnosed with breast cancer every year.  You cannot wait for your yearly doctors visit to be aware.  Here are 5 easy steps to a self-examination that could save your life.

1. Stand in front of a mirror with shoulders straight and your arms on your hips.  Look to see if your breasts are their usual size, shape and color and there isn’t any uneven shaping or swelling.  Notify your doctor if you notice dimpling, puckering, bulging, a nipple that has changed position, redness, soreness, rash or swelling.
2. Raise your arms above your head and look for the same changes.
3. Look for any signs of fluid coming out of one or both nipples (it could be watery, milky, yellow fluid, or blood).
4. Lay down.  Using your right hand to feel your left breast and your left hand to feel your right breast, with your first few finger pads use a circular motion about the size of a quarter to move around your breast.  Cover the entire breast from top to bottom and side to side, from your collar bone to the top of your abdomen and from your armpit to your cleavage.  Use light to medium pressure.  You are feeling for anything that appears abnormal.
5. Repeat the same examination step 4 while standing.  Many women find this easiest and most convenient in the shower.

You are more aware of your body than anyone else.  Commit to a few minutes once a month to evaluate your breasts.  It could make a tremendous difference in a breast cancer diagnosis.

The staff at Dr. Heck’s office had the good fortune of meeting a group of women from a recent plastic surgery conference that put together an amazing guide to breast augmentation.  This group of women work in the office of one of our ASPS board certified plastic surgery associates and have first-hand experience with making this important decision.

We are happy to share their tips for getting stated on breast augmentation and look forward to our initial consultation to determine if breast augmentation is right for you.

Tips for getting starting on the process of breast augmentation:

• Find an ASPS Board Certified Plastic Surgeon
• Determine why breast augmentation is for you
• Research before and after pictures and be sure you are comparing your body type and breast type with those that are similar to you
• Do not focus on a cup size.  Focus on your ideal size and shape of the breast and the proportion of your body.
• Try them on for size!  Spend a great deal of time trying on various sizes of implants with different outfits.  Once you have narrowed down your implant size, try it on again.  You might be surprised to find out that one breast is bigger than the other and each may require a different size implant.  It is very common.
• How important is cleavage to you?  Cleavage is not determined by cup size, but rather the position of the breasts.
• Will you need a breast lift, or mastopexy, along with the breast augmentation?
• What are the costs of the surgery?  How will you pay for the surgery?  There are many options for you to consider.
• Find out a little about the brand of implant that your surgeon uses and whether the best fit for you is silicone or saline implants.
• Work with your surgeon to determine if your implants will be placed submuscular (beneath the muscle) or subglandular (on top of the muscle, beneath the existing breast tissue).
• A couple of other implant things to consider are shape and texture of the implant.
• Determine your recovery plan and put things in place to ensure a quick, healthy recovery.

The first step in the process is finding a surgeon that is a good fit for you.  Once you feel comfortable and confident with the surgeon, many of the common stumbling blocks can be worked through with your surgeon and the office staff.

Below, are some of the common stumbling blocks associated with surgery.  It is important to identify them, make a list and meet with you surgeon to address them.

• Cost of the surgery – Because it is an elective surgery, you may find it hard to justify spending the money on the procedure.  Good new is that in working with your surgeon, you may find that all or part of your procedure could be covered under your insurance.  Many surgeons offer financing plans that will allow you to fit reasonable payments into your budget.
• Feelings of fear and guilt – Any surgical procedure is scary.  You will go into it not being 100% certain of the outcome.  Because you are electing to have this procedure, you are sure to have feelings of guilt.  What sort of burden will you be putting on those that will help with your recovery?  Recovery time varies depending on the individual and the type of surgery, so talk with your surgeon during your consultation on what you can expect during the recovery process. Thus, you and your family will be prepared to handle the initial challenges and make your healing and recovery a smooth and comfortable process.
• Fear of anesthesia – You may not have had a surgical procedure in the past and are terrified about going under anesthesia.  The anesthesiologist will be present during the entire anesthetic and surgical procedure. Their goal is to make it possible for you to undergo your procedure, but also, and just as importantly, they are present to monitor and care for you as though you were in an intensive care unit with your private physician at bedside the entire time. They are trained to control and eliminate pain and anxiety. As a group, they are considered by most standards to be the safest of all the medical-surgical specialties
• Down time – As with any surgical procedure, there is some recovery time necessary to heal and allow your body to conform to the changes that were made.  Often with such advancements in surgical procedures, your down time will be little more than a long weekend with some longer restriction regarding exercise. Make sure to sit down with your physician and their staff and review your post-operative recovery restrictions so you can be prepared with healthy expectations.
• Pain – Not a fan of pain or have a very low pain threshold?  Localized anesthesia and oral pain management allow you to stay comfortable throughout the procedure and during your recovery time.  Many of the new surgical techniques offer non-invasive procedures that minimize pain and recovery.
