Is breast augmentation for everyone? Breast augmentation surgery is only for women that want the procedure for THEMSELVES. If the procedure is being considered as a way to cure depression or please others, then it may not be the fix you are looking for.
What are the characteristics of a good breast augmentation candidate? Women that have never fully developed or have developed with breast asymmetry or women just looking to have larger breasts are prime candidates for augmentation surgery. Also, those women with breast change due to age, childbirth, and/or breast-feeding are great candidates too. A breast augmentation procedure can restore your breast to their more youthful appearance.
Does breast sensitivity remain the same? In most procedures, the sensitivity of the breast remains the same. There is a misconception that nipple sensitivity is lost. With proper surgical procedure and the location of the incision, breast sensitivity typically does remain the same.
Can a woman breast-feed after breast augmentation? Breast augmentation surgery typically does not affect breast feeding.
Can implants lift sagging breasts? Breast sagging occurs over time due to stretching skin, loss of elasticity, and weight loss or gain. Adding an implant can increase volume and help fill sagging skin. With that said, Dr. Heck will determine at the time of you consultation whether these patients may also require a breast lift at the same time as their breast augmentation to address the additional breast tissue.

5-Step Breast Self Examination

October is breast cancer awareness month. How many times have your been asked if you regularly check your breasts for anything that might not be normal? Do you take the time to do it monthly or think that it can wait until your yearly visit to the gynecologist? You are probably thinking…what are the chances that it will really happen to you?

Over 1 million women and men are diagnosed with breast cancer every year. You cannot wait for your yearly doctors visit to be aware. Here are 5 easy steps to a self-examination that could save your life.

Stand in front of a mirror with shoulders straight and your arms on your hips. Look to see if your breasts are their usual size, shape and color and there isn’t any uneven shaping or swelling. Notify your doctor if you notice dimpling, puckering, bulging, a nipple that has changed position, redness, soreness, rash or swelling.
Raise your arms above your head and look for the same changes.
Look for any signs of fluid coming out of one or both nipples (it could be watery, milky, yellow fluid, or blood).
Lay down. Using your right hand to feel your left breast and your left hand to feel your right breast, with your first few finger pads use a circular motion about the size of a quarter to move around your breast. Cover the entire breast from top to bottom and side to side, from your collar bone to the top of your abdomen and from your armpit to your cleavage. Use light to medium pressure. You are feeling for anything that appears abnormal.
Repeat the same examination step 4 while standing. Many women find this easiest and most convenient in the shower.

You are more aware of your body than anyone else. Commit to a few minutes once a month to evaluate your breasts. It could make a tremendous difference in a breast cancer diagnosis.

Breast Augmentation Tips

You may find yourself wishing your breasts looked different then they do. Do you wish they looked like they did when you were in your twenties? Have you always had an issue with the way your breasts looked? Has age and child bearing changed your breast shape into something that doesn’t suit you? If you have asked yourself any of these questions, then you have likely been considering breast augmentation and probably find yourself having even more questions.

The staff at Dr. Heck’s office had the good fortune of meeting a group of women from a recent plastic surgery conference that put together an amazing guide to breast augmentation. This group of women work in the office of one of our ASPS board certified plastic surgery associates and have first-hand experience with making this important decision.

We are happy to share their tips for getting stated on breast augmentation and look forward to our initial consultation to determine if breast augmentation is right for you.

Tips for getting starting on the process of breast augmentation:

Find an ASPS Board Certified Plastic Surgeon
Determine why breast augmentation is for you
Research before and after pictures and be sure you are comparing your body type and breast type with those that are similar to you
Do not focus on a cup size. Focus on your ideal size and shape of the breast and the proportion of your body.
Try them on for size! Spend a great deal of time trying on various sizes of implants with different outfits. Once you have narrowed down your implant size, try it on again. You might be surprised to find out that one breast is bigger than the other and each may require a different size implant. It is very common.
How important is cleavage to you? Cleavage is not determined by cup size, but rather the position of the breasts.
Will you need a breast lift, or mastopexy, along with the breast augmentation?
What are the costs of the surgery? How will you pay for the surgery? There are many options for you to consider.
Find out a little about the brand of implant that your surgeon uses and whether the best fit for you is silicone or saline implants.
Work with your surgeon to determine if your implants will be placed submuscular (beneath the muscle) or subglandular (on top of the muscle, beneath the existing breast tissue).
A couple of other implant things to consider are shape and texture of the implant.
Determine your recovery plan and put things in place to ensure a quick, healthy recovery.

Breast Lift vs. Breast Augmentation

How do you know if you need a breast lift, a breast augmentation, or both? A woman’s breasts change over time due to age, childbirth, weight fluctuation, and genetics. A woman’s breasts are a very personal and sensitive topic. Breast surgery can be a great way to improve your body image and renew your self esteem.

How do you know if you are a candidate for a breast lift?

As you age, your breasts will change shape. They will lose volume, begin to sag, and appear flat. A breast lift is for those women who are happy with the overall size of their breasts but would like them to look perkier, lifted, and more youthful. During a breast lift, Dr. Heck uses a series of incisions around the nipple, below the nipple, and underneath the breasts. The amount of incisions needed varies on the desired amount of lift and correction needed. Recovery is about 5-7 days.

How do you know if you are a candidate for a breast augmentation?

A breast augmentation is for those patients who would like to add volume and fullness to their breasts. Dr. Heck uses both silicone and saline implants and the size is completely up to the patient with some guidance from Dr. Heck. During surgery, Dr. Heck makes an incision underneath the breast to insert the implant. The incision is sutured shut with dissolvable sutures and downtime is approximately 3-5 days.

How do you know if you are a candidate for a breast augmentation with a breast lift?

A breast augmentation with a breast lift is for those patients who have flat, deflated breasts who wish to not only lift the breast tissue but to add volume and fullness at the same time. The incisions for this type of surgery are the same as for a breast lift and downtime is 5-7 days.
