Smartlipo is a laser procedure that uses wavelengths to offer optimal fat disruption and melting for effective body contouring.  It uses a laser to melt away fat cells while simultaneously heating and tightening the skin in the treated area. A small fiber optic cannula is inserted into the top layers of the skin through a small incision.  The laser causes the membranes of the fat cells to rupture.  The melted fat is aspirated through the same incision. Here are some frequently asked questions when considering a liposuction procedure:

• Am I a good candidate for a liposuction procedure?

If you are in good health and feel that through your efforts of diet and exercise you are unable to achieve the body you desire because of some stubborn areas, then liposuction is an option for you.  There is no age limit or body type.  A good candidate generally has several areas of localized fat deposits.  The result of a liposuction procedure would be an improved body contour.

• Will liposuction Remove cellulite?

Liposuction is designed to improve the body’s silhouette.  If there is pre-existing “puckering” of the skin, often referred to as cellulite, liposuction can reduce the appearance but will not eliminate cellulite.

• Does liposuction produce permanent results?

Following a liposuction procedure, the body will take on a new shape.  If there is little weight fluctuation then the body will maintain its look.  If there is significant weight gain, fat deposits are not likely to form in those areas of the body where a liposuction procedure was performed.  Rather, fat will deposit elsewhere in the body.  You must keep in mind the natural changes of a body due to aging.

• Will a liposuction procedure cause indentations in the skin?

Skin indentations and dimpling are a common risk for a liposuction procedure.  Much of this risk is associated with the type of instrument used to perform the procedure and the skill level of the surgeon.  Be sure to question the type of equipment used, the training the Dr. has received and ask to view some before and after images.  Some surgeons may even have patients that are willing to discuss their experience with you.

• Is liposuction an option for fighting obesity?

Liposuction should not be used as a treatment for obesity.  Obese people almost always regain the weight.  It is not healthy or safe to remove excessive amounts of fat from the body due to an increased risk of surgical complications.  Rather, weight should be reduced through diet and exercise.
