Upper eyelid surgery is for those patients with fullness, sagging, or excess skin above the eye. Lower eyelid surgery is for those patients with excess skin and fine wrinkles, bags or droopiness under your eyes.

The procedure is an outpatient surgery and is performed under local or general anesthesia.

With a traditional upper blepharoplasty, the incision is made in the crease of the upper lid and sutures are removed within 10-14 days. With a traditional lower blepharoplasty, the incision is made along the lower lash line and the sutures are dissolvable. After surgery, the eyes make swell and bruise and recovery is typically 2 weeks.

The ASAPS is the leading professional organization of plastic surgeons certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery who specialize in cosmetic surgery.  The ASAPS is at the forefront of innovation in aesthetic plastic surgery around the world.  The mission of the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery Inc., is to advance the science, art, and safe practice of aesthetic plastic surgery among qualified plastic surgeons through support and direction of medical education and research, sponsorship of scientific meetings and dissemination of information on current aesthetic surgical techniques; to promote and encourage the highest standards of ethical conduct and responsible patient care among aesthetic plastic surgeons; to serve the public interest by providing accurate and timely information regarding aesthetic plastic surgery and promoting patient safety; and to advance the medical profession and ensure that aesthetic surgery maintains its proper place within the specialty of plastic surgery.

The requirements for membership in the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery ASAPS are designed to encouraged application by trained and experienced plastic surgeons who concentrate their practices in performing cosmetic plastic surgery of the face and entire body.  ASAPS membership remains an exclusive privilege for those surgeons who possess the necessary qualifications.  Only about ¼ of all American Board of Plastic Surgery certified plastic surgeons have been accepted into ASAPS membership.  Physicians who have been trained in specialties other than plastic surgery are not eligible.  Among the requirements for invitation and election to ASAPS, a plastic surgeon must:

1. Be certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery or in Plastic Surgery by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada
2. Be in at least the third year of active practice following board certification
3. Participate in an accredited Continuing Medical Education (CME) to stay current with developments in the field of cosmetic plastic surgery
4. Document the performance of a significant number and variety of cosmetic surgical cases to demonstrate wide experience
5. Be sponsored by two ASAPS member plastic surgeons to help ensure that the applicant’s professional reputation meets the high standards required by ASAPS
6. Adhere to current ethical standards for professional conduct as outlined in the Code of Ethics observed by all ASAPS- member surgeons

1. Only plastic surgeons can legally perform plastic surgery.
Any doctor with a valid M.D. degree can practice in any field of medicine. The best way to know your surgeon is qualified is to choose an ASPS Member Surgeon

2. Some patients are intimidated to ask a surgeon probing questions about his/her background.
Asking questions is a great way to get to know your surgeon. Asking questions shows you are an informed patient and gives you the opportunity to learn about your surgeon’s qualifications and experience.

3. Plastic surgery costs the same everywhere.
The cost of plastic surgery contains many variables and will always change depending on location, the cost of labor and other overhead.  The cost isn’t the only aspect you should consider when researching a plastic surgeon. Remember to take into account the surgeon’s experience and how comfortable your feel with him or her.

4. All board certifications are the same.
Did you know that any group of medical professionals can create their own “certification” board? There are actually 31 approved boards, all of which are listed at American Board of  Medical Specialties. This again, is another great reason why you should speak with your surgeon and ask about his/her credentials and make sure they are credible.

5. All plastic surgeons perform the same surgeries.
This is not the case. Plastic surgeons do sub-specialize within the specialty of plastic surgery. For example, some surgeons specialize in performing more reconstructive surgeries than others such as hand and burn reconstruction. Dr. Heck specializes in cosmetic or aesthetic surgery. • His/her years of experience
• His/her reputation including word of mouth referrals and personal/professional referrals

1. First of all, it is important to make certain that your plastic surgeon is well trained and experienced. You need to make sure that he/she has attended an accredited medical school and has completed a plastic surgery residency that is fully accredited by the ACGME (Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education).

2. The next step is to make certain that your plastic surgeon is Board Certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery. Board Certification will ensure that your surgeon has undergone rigorous examinations of safety and competency and that he/she has fulfilled their strict educational requirements.

3. Once a surgeon is Board Certified and has met the appropriate requirements, he/she becomes eligible to become a member of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS). The ASPS is the governing body of plastic surgery. They set strict ethical, moral, and educational standards and only accept surgeons who meet these stringent requirements.

4. The next goal of a Board Certified Plastic Surgeon is to become a member of the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS). The ASAPS membership is an exclusive privilege for those plastic surgeons who display exemplary results with years of experience and training in cosmetic plastic surgery of the face and entire body. Members are required to attend the latest and most up-to-date meetings and conventions to stay current with the cutting edge technology and changes surrounding the field of plastic surgery. There are strict requirements to become a member of this elite group of physicians, and each individual most be voted in by his/her peers. By choosing a plastic surgeon that is a member of the ASAPS, you can rest assured that he/she is a leader in their field, well educated, and has the experience to meet your aesthetic needs.

5. It is also a necessity to look into your surgeon’s level of experience. It is reassuring to know that your surgeon has years of experience in his/her field when they are performing your surgery.

6. Next it is good to check into your surgeon’s reputation. Word of mouth and personal experiences can provide great insight into a physician’s character and quality of work.  Don’t be afraid to ask around and talk with your friends.

7. You should also make sure that your plastic surgeon is a specialist in the type of plastic surgery that you desire. For example, you would not choose to have a breast augmentation with a plastic surgeon that specializes in hand or facial surgery. Do not be afraid to look into a physicians training and specialties and make sure they are qualified to perform your surgery.

8. Lastly, check and see if your surgeon has specific Fellowship training. Fellowship training that is performed after the required residency program gives that surgeon an extra knowledge base, experience, and additional skills in performing your surgery.
