1. Only plastic surgeons can legally perform plastic surgery.
Any doctor with a valid M.D. degree can practice in any field of medicine. The best way to know your surgeon is qualified is to choose an ASPS Member Surgeon

2. Some patients are intimidated to ask a surgeon probing questions about his/her background.
Asking questions is a great way to get to know your surgeon. Asking questions shows you are an informed patient and gives you the opportunity to learn about your surgeon’s qualifications and experience.

3. Plastic surgery costs the same everywhere.
The cost of plastic surgery contains many variables and will always change depending on location, the cost of labor and other overhead.  The cost isn’t the only aspect you should consider when researching a plastic surgeon. Remember to take into account the surgeon’s experience and how comfortable your feel with him or her.

4. All board certifications are the same.
Did you know that any group of medical professionals can create their own “certification” board? There are actually 31 approved boards, all of which are listed at American Board of  Medical Specialties. This again, is another great reason why you should speak with your surgeon and ask about his/her credentials and make sure they are credible.

5. All plastic surgeons perform the same surgeries.
This is not the case. Plastic surgeons do sub-specialize within the specialty of plastic surgery. For example, some surgeons specialize in performing more reconstructive surgeries than others such as hand and burn reconstruction. Dr. Heck specializes in cosmetic or aesthetic surgery.
