Breast Augmentation is one of the most popular cosmetic surgery procedures performed by Dr. Heck and an area in which Dr. Heck has chosen to specialize. Whether your breasts are too small or have lost their volume due to aging or childbirth, you can trust Dr. Heck’s artistic abilities to restore their shape and size. Dr. Heck uses a technique that produces excellent results with minimal post operative discomfort. Many women feel well enough to go shopping or enjoy dinner the evening after their breast surgery. There are several different options when it comes to breast augmentation stemming from shape of implant, to location of implant, and most importantly the size of implant and the placement of the incisions. Dr. Heck and his staff will guide you every step of the way to ensure that these decisions are made correctly and tailored specifically for you.
Deciding to have a breast augmentation is a very personal decision. We want you to not only be happy with your choice but to have an increase in your confidence with regards to your body and a renewed self esteem.
During your breast consultation you will have an opportunity to have all your questions answered by Dr. Heck. He will show you many preoperative and postoperative photographs, discuss the type and style of breast implant that would best suit your body type, and give you the opportunity to try on implants.
Determining breast implant size is a critical step when planning a breast augmentation. Dr. Heck will examine your chest and breast tissue to assist you in determining what size would be appropriate for your body. Choosing a breast implant that is too small produces an unsatisfactory result, and choosing a breast implant that is too large can produce an unnatural look. Even though the ultimate decision when choosing breast implant size is up to you, we will do our best to guide you in the right direction.
There are several incisions in which an implant can be placed during a breast augmentation including in the crease under the breast, in the axilla (armpit), or under the areolas. Dr. Heck will discuss these options in great detail during your consultation and recommend the approach best-suited to your body type and goals.
During a breast augmentation, breast implants can be placed under the breast tissue and over the pectoralis muscle or under both the breast tissue and the pectoralis muscle. Dr. Heck prefers to place the implant under the breast tissue and under the pectoralis muscle because it provides a more natural shape to the breast and has a lower rate of complications.
The surgery is performed under general anesthesia at an outpatient surgery center and takes approximately 1 ½ hours to perform. Recovery time is approximately 3-5 days, and there are no drains. It is approximately 2-3 weeks before women can return to physical activity or exercising. After your breast augmentation, you can expect to be sore for about 3-5 days. You will be provided with a script for pain medication to ease your discomfort. You will have swelling around the breasts and across your cleavage which will subside in 3-5 days. You may notice some bruising or discoloration around the breasts or along the incision lines but this will resolve over time. The sutures are dissolvable. It takes approximately 3 months for your breasts to drop and settle into place behind the muscle. We may ask you to start gently massaging your breasts around 2 weeks and moving them around in the breast pocket to encourage the implants to settle. You may apply topical scar cream or topical scar sheets to the incisions after 2 weeks.
