An abdominoplasty is a surgical procedure that can smooth and flatten the abdominal area or "tummy". As the prominent Columbus, Ohio abdominoplasty surgeon, Dr. Robert Heck will accomplish this by removing the excess skin and fat from the mid and lower abdomen while also tightening the underlying stomach muscles to give you a sleek and toned appearance. Those women who have additional skin and fat from child birth or significant weight loss are ideal candidates. It is finally time to take care of yourself and fit into those low rise jeans or that bikini you have been dying to wear. Let us do the work, and you can enjoy the results!
During your abdominoplasty consultation you will have an opportunity to have all your tummy tuck questions answered by Dr. Heck. He will show you many preoperative and postoperative photographs and discuss the best procedure and surgical technique to suit your body type. He can also discuss other options including liposuction in addition to a tummy tuck to help contour and sculpt your abdomen. Our goal is for you to be happy and satisfied with your results and well informed on all your options.
A mini tummy tuck is less invasive and is usually for those patients with only excess skin on the lower abdomen. The incision is at the level of the pubic bone and the abdominal muscles below the belly button are tightened, and a small to moderate amount of excess skin below the umbilicus is removed to create a flat, youthful appearance to the abdomen.
A full tummy tuck involves removing excess skin and fatty tissue from the upper and lower abdomen, repairing and tightening torn or separated abdominal muscles, and repositioning the umbilicus.
The tummy tuck surgery is performed under general anesthesia at an outpatient surgery center and takes approximately 1 ½ –2 hours to perform. Recovery time is approximately 7-10 days. Patients will most likely have 1 or 2 drains in the lower abdominal area for about 7-10 days to minimize swelling and facilitate healing. You will be asked to sleep wit your head and knees elevated on several pillows to keep from pulling on the abdominal incision for about 2 weeks. You will need to walk slightly bent over for about 3 days to also keep from putting tension on the abdominal incision and to keep the incision from rising. You can return to exercising in about 4-6 weeks. After your abdominoplasty, you can expect to be sore for about 7-10 days. You will be provided with a script for pain medication to ease your discomfort. You will notice an almost immediate result with a flatter, firmer, and more contoured abdomen. It is very normal to have swelling in the area below your umbilicus after surgery and this will generally subside within 4-6 weeks. You will be provided with an abdominal binder to wear 24 hours day and night for 2 weeks. The sutures are dissolvable. You may apply topical scar cream or topical scar sheets to the incisions after 2 weeks.
